HybridCore V2 vs. Bamboo-Only Decks
HybridCore V2 vs. Bamboo-Only Decks
Bamboo skateboard decks have been around for years. They are marketed as lighter, more flexible, and more sustainable than maple. Some of that is true. But a bamboo-only deck and the HybridCore V2 — which also contains bamboo — are fundamentally different products. This page explains why.
What Is a Bamboo-Only Deck?
A bamboo-only deck (or bamboo-maple hybrid, which most "bamboo decks" actually are) replaces some or all of the maple plies with bamboo veneers. The most common construction is 2–3 layers of bamboo sandwiched between maple veneers, pressed in the same way as a standard 7-ply deck.
Typical bamboo deck construction:
- Maple top veneer
- Bamboo layer
- Maple core layers (2–4 ply)
- Bamboo layer
- Maple bottom veneer
The result is a deck that is slightly lighter and more flexible than pure maple, with a softer feel underfoot. Some skaters like this. Others find it too flexy and lacking in pop.
What Is the HybridCore V2?
The HybridCore V2 uses bamboo as the center rebound core — but surrounds it with carbon fiber outer shells, maple structural layers, and a fiberglass bonding layer. Bamboo in the V2 is not the primary structural material. It is the rebound and energy-storage component in an engineered composite stack.

Bamboo is in the center — where its elasticity does the most work — protected by carbon fiber on both sides.
Key Differences
Stiffness Bamboo-only decks are typically softer and more flexible than maple. Some skaters enjoy the forgiving feel, but reduced stiffness means less precise torsional control and less snap on tricks.
The HybridCore V2 is stiffer than both maple and bamboo-only decks — the ±45° carbon outer shells provide torsional lock that bamboo alone cannot achieve. The bamboo core contributes rebound without compromising structural stiffness.
Pop Bamboo-only decks have decent pop due to bamboo's natural elasticity, but without structural reinforcement the energy disperses across the whole deck rather than being directed into the tail. Pop feels softer and less snappy than maple.
The V2 uses bamboo specifically for its elasticity — but the carbon framework directs that energy efficiently. Pop is snappier and more consistent over time than either maple or bamboo-only.
Torsional Control Bamboo-only decks have lower torsional stiffness than maple — the natural fiber orientation of bamboo is primarily longitudinal, which means lateral flex is relatively unconstrained. This can feel unpredictable under hard off-axis landings.
The V2's ±45° carbon outer shells exist specifically to control torsional flex. This is the biggest structural difference between a bamboo-only deck and the HybridCore V2.
Durability Bamboo is more impact-resistant than maple in some directions but can delaminate more easily than maple at the glue joints, particularly under moisture exposure. Bamboo-only decks are not inherently more durable than maple.
The V2's fiberglass bonding layer between bamboo and maple specifically addresses delamination risk. The carbon outer shells distribute impact forces. The overall construction is significantly more durable than bamboo-only.
Sustainability Bamboo is a renewable resource and grows significantly faster than maple — a genuine sustainability advantage. This is one of the honest reasons to choose bamboo.
The HybridCore V2 also contains bamboo, so it shares this advantage partially. However, carbon fiber production is energy-intensive — the V2 is not marketed as a sustainability product. It is marketed as a performance product.
Comparison Table
| Feature | HybridCore V2 | Bamboo-Only Deck |
|---|---|---|
| Contains bamboo | Yes — center rebound core | Yes — primary structural material |
| Contains carbon fiber | Yes — ±45° outer shells + 0° inner layers | No |
| Stiffness | High | Low-medium (softer than maple) |
| Torsional control | High (carbon outer shells) | Low (bamboo unconstrained) |
| Pop | High, consistent, long-lasting | Medium, soft feel, fades |
| Durability | High | Medium — delamination risk |
| Feel | Precise, stiff, responsive | Soft, forgiving, flexy |
| Sustainability | Partial (bamboo core) | Higher (primary material) |
| Price | CHF 119.95–126.95 | CHF 60–100 typically |
Which Should You Choose?
Choose HybridCore V2 if: You want bamboo's rebound energy as part of a composite system that also gives you torsional control, stiffness, and carbon fiber protection. You want performance.
Choose a bamboo-only deck if: You specifically want a softer, more flexible feel underfoot, or sustainability is your primary decision factor.
The honest answer: The HybridCore V2 contains bamboo and delivers the benefits of bamboo's elasticity — but within a carbon composite framework that solves the problems bamboo-only decks have. If you are choosing between bamboo-only and the V2, the V2 is the more complete product.
